A fierce meteorite display blinds almost the entire population of the world. Everywhere sinister giant plants - the Triffids - appear who pursue and attack humans. Two survivors from London, Bill (Howard Keel) and Susan (Janina Faye), escape to France and finally to Spain with Christine (Nicole Maurey), another survivor.

They meet a young blind couple who have learnt by radio that unscathed submarines at Alicante will take on board any survivors. They manage to reach the last submarine. Meanwhile Tom (Kieron Moore) and Karen (Janette Scott), isolated in an English lighthouse, fight off the rapidly propagating Triffids. Who seem to have a taste for humans.

“Keep behind me. There's no sense in getting killed by a plant!”
