During WW2, RAF Flight Lieutenant Michael Quinn (Dirk Bogarde) is stationed in Burma. He is recruited by Army Intelligence, who send him to learn Japanese so that he might interrogate Japanese POWs. At the language school he falls in-love with his pretty Japanese teacher “Sabby” (Yoko Tani). Sabby is regarded as an enemy and is not accepted by Quinn’s countrymen. The Japanese forces eventually push their way into Burma and threaten to invade British India. Quinn is captured while on patrol in a Japanese-controlled zone. He escapes and returns to his own lines, only to discover that his beautiful Sabby is suffering from a terrible illness.
