It was 4:31 am, January 17th. In LA’s pre-dawn darkness, the city slept. The roads were nearly empty. The air was still. Then it happened. With a thunderous roar, the ground began to shake violently as the most devastating earthquake to ever strike Southern California ripped through the city. Flattening homes and apartment buildings, shattering freeways, rupturing pipelines, the quake killed 60 people and injured over 9,000, random victims of the earth’s most extreme event. Throughout the days of frightening aftershocks that followed, tent cities sprang up, heroes were born, and in a town were few people knew their neighbors, people met and helped each other, finding common ground in their very survival. Here is a video record (produced in 1994 by KNBC, Los Angeles) of those electrifying minutes, hours and days that followed the LA Earthquake of 1994 – the most destructive natural disaster in U.S. history.
