Jim Harvey (Audie Murphy) is hired to guard a small wagon train as it makes its way west. After he saves the life of a Yaqui warrior, Tigre (Eugene Iglesias), the wagon train is attacked and Harvey realizes their only chance of survival is to negotiate with Tigre's father, Chief Aguila (Ralph Moody). Harvey is captured and the wagon train is virtually wiped out. Escaping and showing up in town later, Harvey is nearly hanged as a deserter, but gets away on a borrowed horse named Tumbleweed, trying to prove his innocence and find the real culprit behind the attack.
