Somewhere in England in autumn 1955, widowed veteran William Smith and his son, Danny (real life father and son Jeremy Irons and Samuel Irons), live an idyllic life together. But their property happens to sit on a piece of land that a local developer named Victor Hazell (Robbie Coltrane) wants to buy. When Hazell won't take no for an answer, and sets government inspectors and social works onto them, they decide to get even with him and his pheasant-shooting friends in a manner in keeping with their own family traditions.
